Start with the right place
Choose a location with an open view and little artificial light. At lower northern latitudes, an unobstructed northern horizon is useful because aurora may remain low in the sky. Check access and the route before heading out.
Check clouds, not just Kp
Aurora happens high above ordinary weather. Thick clouds can hide it even during strong activity. Look for clear windows near your location rather than relying on a promising Kp value alone.
Make darkness work for you
Check the hours of darkness as well as moonlight. A bright Moon can reduce the contrast of faint aurora, although stronger displays can still be visible. Dim your screen and give your eyes time to adjust.
Stay flexible
Conditions can change over the course of a night. Recheck the forecast, dress for the weather and allow time to wait. A camera may reveal faint colour that is less obvious to your eyes; enjoy what you can actually see too.
