Live Kp: what is happening now?

The current estimated Kp reading describes recent geomagnetic conditions. Look at its observation time: a fresh reading is more useful for tonight than an old one. Even current data do not predict the exact moment a display will begin.

The 3-day forecast: plan the next few nights

A shorter forecast helps you compare upcoming periods of geomagnetic activity. Match the expected active windows with darkness at your location, then check for cloud breaks before you leave.

The 27-day outlook: see the bigger picture

The longer outlook helps identify potentially active dates weeks ahead. NOAA’s product includes predicted geomagnetic indices. Treat it as a planning signal and revisit your plans as shorter-range forecasts become available.

Alerts: a reason to check again

NOAA SWPC watches, warnings and alerts provide different kinds of space weather information. A bulletin can flag changing conditions, but does not guarantee aurora overhead. Recheck activity, local weather and darkness together.
