What is the Kp index?
Kp is a planetary measure of geomagnetic activity. It brings together magnetic observations into a scale from 0 to 9 over three-hour intervals. Higher values mean a more disturbed magnetic field; Kp 5 marks the start of NOAA’s geomagnetic storm scale.
What does it mean for the aurora?
During stronger activity, the auroral oval can extend toward lower latitudes. This can create opportunities farther from the poles. Near the usual auroral zone, a quiet Kp reading can still accompany a visible display.
Why location matters
Kp is a global indicator. It cannot tell you whether a particular horizon will be clear, dark or inside the auroral oval. Use it alongside a local aurora forecast, cloud cover and your viewing location.
Turn the number into a plan
Check the latest reading, compare it with the upcoming forecast, then look at the local sky. An alert can prompt you to check conditions; your final decision still depends on darkness and weather.
